National Latino/Latina Physician Day 10/1/2023

Did you know that only 6% of physicians and 6.3% of PAs are Latino or Latina in the US, despite the country being made up of 19.5% Latinx people?

California has a Latinx population reaching 39% with 6.3% Latinx Physicians 16% Physician Assistants.

Texas which has an even higher population at 40% only has 11.3% Latinx Physicians and 18% Latinx PAs.

There are significant health care barriers, inequalities, and poorer outcomes in the Latino/Hispanic population. Having Latinos better represented in medicine is necessary for our communities and for the future of medicine in the United States.

PAs for Latino Health supports Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz and Congresswoman Dr. Yadira Caraveo who introduced legislation to designate October 1st as National Latino and Latina Physician Day. This pivotal resolution recognizes the invaluable contributions of Latino and Latina physicians, and calls upon the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and various stakeholders, including states, local educational agencies, schools, and community organizations, to support Latino medical students and aspiring medical students through increased funding, awareness, and retention of pre-medical and medical programs nationwide, with a special emphasis on programs geared towards Latinos. Together, let's unite our voices, raise awareness, and work towards making National Latino and Latina Physician Day a reality.

We encourage you to tag, re-share, and reach out to your local representatives and members of Congress to show your support for this cause. Together, we can champion diversity in healthcare and improve health outcomes for all.

By celebrating and supporting Latino and Latina physicians, we take a significant step towards closing this gap and ensuring that all patients have access to quality healthcare. This initiative not only highlights the importance of a diverse medical workforce but also generates crucial public awareness of health care workforce disparities.
